Do you know where the name “ladybug” came from?

European farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary when pests began eating their crops. After ladybugs came and wiped out the invading insects, the farmers named them “beetle of Our Lady.” This was eventually shortened to “lady beetle” and “ladybug.”

They were brought to North America in the mid-1900s to control aphid populations.

Their bright colours signal to predators that they don’t taste good. When threatened, they will secrete an oily, foul-tasting fluid from joints in their legs. They also play dead!

Did you know that Forget-me-nots have a super cool evolutionary trait to help attract pollinators?

The flowers centre has a fleshy yellow ring which is a nectar guide. Once a bee or other pollinator has spotted that yellow ring, the plant has ensured its succession by pollination. Once the flower had been pollinated, the centre turns a light brown to signal that there is no longer any nectar.

The American Robin - a sure sign of Spring 🪱

Here are some fun Robin facts:

-Males arrive back up to two weeks before females

-They eat a variety of insects and berries, but worms are a very important part of their diet

-Robins have a very poor sense of smell, so they use eyesight to catch worms. They tilt their heads side to side and use each eye to look for any visible signs of worms

-Their eyesight is pretty awesome, they can even detect the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field thanks to a magnetic compass in their right eye.

-It is also thought that they stand motionless to feel for the underground vibrations of the worms

-They can catch up to 20 worms in an hour and eat an average of 14 feet of worms in one day!

That’s a lot of worms!
